Wildlife Trust of India(WTI) has launched the \u2018Save the Whale Shark Campaign<\/strong>\u2019 along Karnataka, Kerala and Lakshadweep.<\/span><\/p>\n

What is the Save the Whale Shark Campaign?<\/b><\/h5>\n

Launched by: <\/b>Wildlife Trust of India(WTI) along with Karnataka, Kerala and Lakshadweep.<\/span><\/p>\n

Aim: <\/b>To reduce and eradicate whale shark death in the incidental catch in fishing nets by the voluntary release of the whale shark.<\/span><\/p>\n

What is a Whale Shark?<\/b><\/h5>\n

The whale shark (<\/span>Rhincodon typus<\/span><\/i>) is the largest fish on Earth and a keystone species in marine ecosystems.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Features<\/b>: It can grow to a length of approximately 18 metres and weigh as much as 21 tonnes.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 They are ovoviviparous \u2013 meaning they give birth to live young rather than lay eggs \u2013 and can reach sexual maturity at around 10 years old.<\/span><\/p>\n

Distribution: <\/b>It is distributed widely across tropical and warm temperate seas.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 The whale shark is distributed all along the Indian coast. However, the largest whale shark aggregation is along the Gujarat coast.<\/span><\/p>\n

Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972:<\/b> Schedule I<\/span><\/p>\n

IUCN Red List: <\/b>Endangered.<\/span><\/p>\n

Threat:<\/b> The main threat is accidental entanglement in fishing nets. This can result in mortality.<\/span><\/p>\n
