What is the News?<\/b><\/h5>\n

Maharashtra\u2019s Deputy Chief Minister is in Moscow to unveil the statue of Annabhau Sathe at the All-Russia State Library for Foreign Literature.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sathe\u2019s work was immensely inspired by the Russian Revolution and the Communist ideology. He was a member of the Communist Party of India (CPI) and featured among the selected authors from India whose work was translated into Russian.<\/span><\/p>\n

Who was Annabhau Sathe?<\/b><\/h5>\n

Tukaram Bhaurao Sathe who later came to be known as Annabhau Sathe was born in a Dalit family in 1920 in Maharashtra. In 1930, his family left the village and came to Mumbai.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

During his days at the Matunga Labour Camp, he got to know R B More, an associate of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar in the famous<\/span> \u2018Chavdar Lake\u2019 satyagrah<\/b>a<\/strong> at Mahad, and joined the labour study circle. It was during these study circles that he learned to read and write.<\/span><\/p>\n

About the organizations formed by Annabhau Sathe<\/b><\/h5>\n

He formed <\/span>Dalit Yuvak Sangh,<\/b> a cultural group and started writing poems on workers\u2019 protests, and agitations. The group used to perform in front of the mill gates.<\/span><\/p>\n

In 1943, he formed the <\/span>Lal Bawta Kala Pathak. <\/b>The group toured across Maharashtra presenting programmes on caste atrocities, class conflict, and workers\u2019 rights.<\/span><\/p>\n

What are the famous literary works of Sathe?<\/b><\/h5>\n

The prominent Dalit novel in Marathi <\/span>Fakira<\/i><\/b> (1959)<\/b> is among his best-known works and bagged the state government\u2019s top literary award in 1961.<\/span><\/p>\n

Some of the other notable works include <\/span>Stalingradcha Powada<\/span><\/i>, <\/span>Majhi Maina Gavavar Rahili<\/span><\/i>, and a travelogue titled <\/span>Majha Russiacha Pravas<\/span><\/i> (My Travel to Russia).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Another notable work <\/span>Bangalchi Hak<\/i><\/b> (Bengal\u2019s Call) <\/b>on the Bengal famine was translated into Bengali. It was later performed at London\u2019s Theatre Royal.<\/span><\/p>\n
