These hazards include landslides, rock-ice avalanches, debris flow and lake outburst floods, all of which could increase with glacier melt and slope destabilization.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, the avalanche-triggered flood in Chamoli, Uttarakhand in February last year destroyed two hydropower projects.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Global warming is also expected to lead to more glacier melt and extreme precipitation events in the region. Increased development in the mountains could also aggravate risks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The biggest threat may be lake outburst floods including landslide-driven lake outbursts and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/glacial-lake-outburst-flood-glof-in-uttarakhand-explained\/\">glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFS)<\/a><\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Note<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: GLOFS refer to the sudden release of water from a lake formed by glacial melt.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Source: The post is based on the article \u201cHow climate change is threatening Himalayan hydropower projects\u201d published in TOI on 30th September 2022.
