{"id":210639,"date":"2022-10-15T20:27:52","date_gmt":"2022-10-15T14:57:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=210639"},"modified":"2022-10-15T20:27:52","modified_gmt":"2022-10-15T14:57:52","slug":"smash-hit-on-dart-mission","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/smash-hit-on-dart-mission\/","title":{"rendered":"Smash hit \u2013 On DART mission"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Source<\/strong>: The post is based on an article\u00a0\u201cSmash hit\u201d\u00a0published in\u00a0<strong>The Hindu <\/strong>on\u00a0<strong>15<sup>th<\/sup> October 2022<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Syllabus: GS 3 \u2013 Science and Technology<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Relevance:\u00a0<\/strong>benefits of DART mission<\/p>\n<p><strong>News<\/strong>: The article discusses about the success of the DART mission conducted by NASA and its uses.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What is the news?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>NASA scientists for the first time have succeeded in altering the path of the asteroid by hitting the spacecraft into it.<\/p>\n<p>The spacecraft DART (Double Asteroid Redirection Test) was aimed at asteroid Dimorphos which was orbiting a larger asteroid Didymos.<\/p>\n<p>These two asteroids did not pose any threat for the planet earth and DART was a test mission to see the effectiveness of the technique (kinetic impactor) in altering the path of the asteroid by a desired amount.<\/p>\n<p>After the collision of the spacecraft with the asteroid, NASA confirmed that it was able to change the path of the asteroid by a small amount.<\/p>\n<p>Since all asteroids are not similar therefore there is a need for more tests to perfect this technique.<\/p>\n<p>Further, the US is not alone in the mission and even China has also planned to deflect a 40 m wide asteroid by 2026.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why is it necessary to develops this technique?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There is a need to develop this technique as even a small asteroid hitting the earth can have serious consequences to life on earth and climate change. An asteroid even about 100 m wide can destroy a city like Chennai.<\/p>\n<p>However, it is not clear whether the kinetic impactor technique can be used to extract minerals from the asteroids by deflecting its path.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Source: The post is based on an article\u00a0\u201cSmash hit\u201d\u00a0published in\u00a0The Hindu on\u00a015th October 2022.
