These are located in the Pacific Ocean around 1,000 km away from the South American continent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1978, the islands became UNESCO\u2019s first World Heritage Site. It is described by the UNESCO World Heritage Convention as a \u201cliving museum and showcase of evolution.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The islands contain aquatic species such as manta rays and sharks which have been endangered by commercial fishing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gal\u00e1pagos is home to the critically endangered \u2014 Gal\u00e1pagos penguin, Gal\u00e1pagos fur seal and Gal\u00e1pagos sea lion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also, the giant tortoises found here \u2013 &#8216;Gal\u00e1pagos&#8217; in old Spanish \u2013 give the islands its name.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>How are cold ocean currents helping Galapagos Islands <\/b><b>from global warming<\/b><b>?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Galapagos islands are protected from an otherwise warming the Pacific Ocean by a cold, eastward equatorial ocean current.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The equatorial undercurrent in the Pacific Ocean is bound to the equator by the force of the planet\u2019s rotation. Under the ocean\u2019s surface, a swift circulation of cold, nutrient-rich water flows from west to east.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some of this water is forced to the surface when it reaches the Gal\u00e1pagos Islands.
