{"id":211740,"date":"2022-10-26T18:15:09","date_gmt":"2022-10-26T12:45:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=211740"},"modified":"2022-10-26T18:15:09","modified_gmt":"2022-10-26T12:45:09","slug":"sandalwood-spike-disease-invisible-disease-wreaks-havoc-on-commercial-sandalwood-cultivation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/sandalwood-spike-disease-invisible-disease-wreaks-havoc-on-commercial-sandalwood-cultivation\/","title":{"rendered":"Sandalwood Spike disease: \u2018Invisible\u2019 disease wreaks havoc on commercial sandalwood cultivation"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The post is based on the article<\/span><b> \u201cInvisible disease wreaks havoc on commercial sandalwood cultivation\u201d <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">published in <\/span><b>PIB <\/b>on<b> 25th October 2022<\/b><\/p>\n<h5><b>What is the News?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study has shown that Sandalwood Spike Disease(SSD) is posing a severe threat on the Commercial Cultivation of Sandalwood.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>What is Sandalwood Spike disease?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/union-minister-inaugurates-training-program-on-sandalwood-farming-management-of-its-health\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sandalwood <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spike disease is a major infectious disease of Sandalwood trees.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Transmission:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The disease can transmit through seeds of infected trees through the presence of disease-causing bacteria called Phytoplasma.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Note: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Phytoplasmas are bacterial parasites of plant tissues \u2014 which are transmitted by insect vectors and involved in plant-to-plant transmission.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Origin: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The disease was first reported in Kodagu, Karnataka in 1899. More than a million sandalwood trees were removed in the Kodagu and Mysore region between 1903 and 1916.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Treatment:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> There is no cure as of now for the disease. Hence, presently, there is no option but to cut down and remove the infected tree to prevent the spread of the disease.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Concerns: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">About 1% to 5% of sandalwood trees are lost every year due to the disease. Scientists warn that it could wipe out the entire natural Sandalwood population if measures are not taken to prevent its spread.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Measures taken: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To combat the Sandalwood Spike disease, the Institute of Wood Science and Technology(IWST), Bangalore has joined hands with the Pune-based National Centre for Cell Sciences for a three-year study.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 This study has recommended accreditation of commercial production of sandalwood seedlings through testing to ensure that the plants are free from SSD.
