What is the News?<\/b><\/h5>\n

At the <\/span>India Space Congress, the Indian Space Research Organisation(ISRO) has revealed its plans to expand the reach of NavIC (Navigation with Indian Constellation) beyond India and not to a limited territory around India.<\/span><\/p>\n

What is NavIC?<\/b><\/h5>\n

What are the changes NavIC will undergo in future?<\/b><\/h5>\n

Adding L1 band into NavIC: <\/b>Currently, NavIC is only compatible with the L5 and S bands and hasn\u2019t easily penetrated into the civilian sector.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 ISRO is now planning to add the L1 band into NavIC. This bandwidth is part of the GPS and is the most used for civilian navigational use.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Increase the safety of signals: <\/b>There is a Long Code and Short Code. Currently (NavIC) only provides short code. This has to become a Long Code for the use of the strategic sector. This prevents the signal from being breached.<\/span><\/p>\n

Expand NavIC reach: <\/b>Currently, NavIC satellites orbit the earth in a geostationary or geosynchronous (GEO) orbit or about 36,000 km from the earth. Its reach is only 1,500 km beyond Indian territory.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 To make NavIC global, India needs satellites in Medium Earth Orbit(MEO). Hence, ISRO is planning to launch satellites in MEO.<\/span><\/p>\n

Note: <\/b>MEO orbits occupy a space between GEO and Low Earth Orbit (LEO) or about 250-2,000 km from earth.<\/span><\/p>\n
