{"id":213001,"date":"2022-11-04T18:36:05","date_gmt":"2022-11-04T13:06:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=213001"},"modified":"2022-11-04T18:36:05","modified_gmt":"2022-11-04T13:06:05","slug":"crispr-gene-editing-possible-in-temperature-sensitive-organisms-plants-crop-varieties","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/crispr-gene-editing-possible-in-temperature-sensitive-organisms-plants-crop-varieties\/","title":{"rendered":"CRISPR gene-editing possible in temperature sensitive organisms, plants &amp; crop varieties"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The post is based on the article<\/span><b> \u201c<\/b><b>CRISPR gene-editing possible in temperature sensitive organisms, plants &amp; crop varieties\u201d<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">published in<\/span><b> PIB <\/b>on <b>3rd November 2022.<\/b><\/p>\n<h5><b>What is the News?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The CRISPR gene-editing technology that received the Nobel Prize in 2020 has witnessed a new height.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indian scientists have now demonstrated for the first time that the CRISPR-associated Cas9 enzyme can bind to and cut the target DNA at very low temperatures.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>What is CRISPR?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/from-promise-to-reality-10-years-after-breakthrough-a-crispr-solution-to-problems-of-health-begins-to-take-shape\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CRISPR (Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats) <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are short DNA sequences found in the genome of prokaryotic organisms such as bacteria, which are reminders of previous\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bacteriophage (viruses) attacks that the bacteria successfully defended against.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cas9 enzyme (part of bacteria\u2019s defense mechanism) uses these flags to precisely target and cut any foreign DNA, thus protecting the bacteria from future attacks by similar bacteriophages.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The unprecedented precision of targeting the DNA sequences and then efficiently cutting them is the basis for CRISPR-Cas9 technology.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>What has been demonstrated by scientists now related to CRISPR?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CRISPR-Cas9 technology has been successfully used for many purposes including basic studies of gene function, agriculture and medicine to increase our knowledge of disease processes and their potential future therapies. So far, most binding trials were typically performed at 37 \u00b0C.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now the Indian scientists have demonstrated for the first time that the associated Cas9 enzyme, which acts as molecular scissors to cut DNA at a location specified by a guide RNA, can bind to and cut the target DNA at very low temperatures as low as 4 degrees <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Celsius.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This will make it possible to edit genes in temperature-sensitive organisms, plants or crop varieties.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Source: The post is based on the article \u201cCRISPR gene-editing possible in temperature sensitive organisms, plants &amp; crop varieties\u201d published in PIB on 3rd November 2022.
