Mauna Loa is one of five volcanoes that together make up the Big Island of Hawaii. <\/span>It is the southernmost island in the Hawaiian archipelago.<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s not the tallest (that title goes to Mauna Kea) but it\u2019s the largest and makes up about half of the island\u2019s land mass.<\/span><\/p>\n

It sits immediately north of <\/span>Kilauea volcano<\/b>, which is currently erupting from its summit crater.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 Kilauea is well-known for a 2018 eruption that destroyed 700 homes and sent rivers of lava spreading across farms and into the ocean.<\/span><\/p>\n

Will Mauna Loa erupt like Kilauea?<\/b><\/h5>\n

Mauna Loa\u2019s eruptions differ from Kilauea\u2019s in part because it is taller. Its greater height gives it steeper slopes, which allow lava to rush down its hillsides faster than Kilauea\u2019s.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
