The United Nations(UN) Secretary-General addressed the world leaders at the opening of the COP27 UN climate summit in Egypt.<\/span><\/p>\n

What are the key highlights of the address?<\/b><\/h5>\n

Need for a Climate Solidarity Pact<\/b>: H<\/span>umanity faces a stark choice between working together or \u201ccollective suicide\u201d in the battle against global warming.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 Nations worldwide are coping with increasingly intense natural disasters that have taken thousands of lives this year alone and cost tens of billions of dollars \u2013 from devastating floods in Nigeria and Pakistan to droughts in Kenya and Somalia.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 Hence, a Climate Solidarity Pact \u2014 where developed and emerging economies work together to accelerate energy transition \u2014 is a must for a better future as Earth fast approaches a tipping point that will make climate chaos irreversible.<\/span><\/p>\n

On Adaptation:<\/b> Some 3.5 billion people are currently living in countries which are vulnerable to the impacts of climate change.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 Hence, the world desperately needs progress on adaptation. In Glasgow, developed countries promised to double adaptation support to $40 billion a year by 2025. And we must recognize that this is only a first step. Adaptation needs are set to grow to more than $300 billion dollars a year by 2030.<\/span><\/p>\n

Phase out the use of Coal:<\/b> Countries should agree to phase out the use of coal, one of the most carbon-intense fuels by 2040 globally.<\/span><\/p>\n

On <\/b>Loss and Damage<\/b><\/a>:<\/b> COP27 must agree on a \u201cclear, time-bound roadmap\u201d for loss and damage that delivers \u201ceffective institutional arrangements for financing\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
