This is done in recognition of Annamalai University\u2019s 100 years of service in education and research.<\/p>\n<h5>About Pseudohelice annamalai<\/h5>\n<figure id=\"attachment_213672\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-213672\" style=\"width: 260px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-213672\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Pseudohelice-annamalai.png?resize=260%2C311&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Pseudohelice\" width=\"260\" height=\"311\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Pseudohelice-annamalai.png?w=700&amp;ssl=1 700w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Pseudohelice-annamalai.png?resize=250%2C300&amp;ssl=1 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 260px) 100vw, 260px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-213672\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: The Hindu<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A new species of estuarine crab has been discovered in the mangroves near the Vellar River estuary in the Cuddalore district.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Characteristics<\/strong>: It is distinguished by dark purple to dark grey colouring, with irregular light brown, yellowish brown, or white patches on the posterior carapace with light brown chelipeds.<\/p>\n<p>The new species is small and has a maximum width of up to 20 mm. This species is not aggressive and can move fast like other intertidal crabs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Distribution<\/strong>: The species inhabits muddy banks of mangroves and burrows.\u00a0The species discovered is distributed around the Indian subcontinent and the eastern Indian Ocean.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Significance<\/strong>: This is the first-ever record of this genus in India. So far, only two species \u2014 Pseudohelice subquadrata and Pseudohelice latreilli \u2014 have been confirmed within this genus.<\/p>\n<p>The occurrence of Pseudohelice in India <strong>links the distribution gap<\/strong> between the western Indian Ocean and the western Pacific Ocean.
