{"id":214453,"date":"2022-11-15T20:17:06","date_gmt":"2022-11-15T14:47:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=214453"},"modified":"2022-12-08T12:53:00","modified_gmt":"2022-12-08T07:23:00","slug":"who-was-sir-cp-whose-independent-travancore-mission-ended-with-assassination-bid","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/who-was-sir-cp-whose-independent-travancore-mission-ended-with-assassination-bid\/","title":{"rendered":"Who was Sir CP, whose \u2018independent Travancore mission\u2019 ended with assassination bid"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The post is based on the article <\/span><b>\u201cWho was Sir CP, whose \u2018independent Travancore mission\u2019 ended with assassination bid\u201d <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">published in <\/span><b>Indian Express <\/b>on<b> 15th November 2022<\/b><\/p>\n<h5><b>What is the News?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The name of former Travancore Diwan Sir CP Ramaswamy Iyer has been mentioned in the middle of the ongoing disagreement between the Kerala administration and the Governor.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>Who is Sir CP Ramaswamy Iyer?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sir Chetput Pattabhiraman Ramaswamy Iyer, popularly known as \u2018Sir CP\u2019, was the Diwan of the erstwhile Travancore princely state from 1936 to 1947.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He rose to glorious heights as he found favour with both the crown prince Sri Chithira Thirunal Bala Rama Varma and Lord Willingdon, the Viceroy of India.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From 1936 to 1947, he was the Diwan of the old Travancore princely state.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Independent Travancore: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On June 3, 1947, Britain announced its intention to quit India, while also accepting demands for the country\u2019s partition.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 Following this, the Indian Independence Act of 1947 gave princely states the option to accede to the newly divided territories of India or Pakistan or continue as an independent sovereign state.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 Maharaja Sri Chithira Thirunal, who wished to stay independent, was supported by Sir CP, who declared his intention of forming an independent state of Travancore that would be open to the idea of signing a treaty with the Indian union.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Punnapra-Vayalar revolt<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Amid his dream of an independent state, Sir CP became more unpopular as he proposed an \u2018American model\u2019 for Travancore.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 His policies led to a massive uprising, the <\/span><b>Punnapra-Vayalar revolt<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which was suppressed by the Travancore army and navy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 The anger and discontent culminated into an assassination attempt on Sir CP on July 25, 1947.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Joining of India: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sir CP agreed to the accession of Travancore state to the Indian Union, following which he resigned and left for London.
