{"id":214789,"date":"2022-11-17T19:09:45","date_gmt":"2022-11-17T13:39:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=214789"},"modified":"2022-11-17T19:09:45","modified_gmt":"2022-11-17T13:39:45","slug":"india-moves-two-ranks-in-climate-performance-index","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/india-moves-two-ranks-in-climate-performance-index\/","title":{"rendered":"India moves two ranks in climate performance index"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The post is based on the article<\/span><b> \u201cIndia moves two ranks in climate performance index\u201d <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">published in <\/span><b>Indian Express <\/b>on<b> 16th November 2022<\/b><\/p>\n<h5><b>What is the News?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Climate Change Performance Index 2023 has been released by Germanwatch, the New Climate Institute and the Climate Action Network.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>What is the Climate Change Performance Index?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Climate Change Performance Index(CCPI) is an independent monitoring tool for tracking the climate protection performance of 59 countries and the European Union which together generate over 92% of global greenhouse gas emissions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Aim:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> To enhance transparency in international climate politics and enable comparison of climate protection efforts and progress made by individual countries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Parameters: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CCPI assesses each country\u2019s performance in four categories: GHG Emissions (40% of the overall ranking), Renewable Energy (20%), Energy Use (20%) and Climate Policy (20%).<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>What are the key findings of CCPI 2023?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><b>India\u2019s Ranking<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: India has been ranked 8th amongst a group of 59 countries and the European Union. It has risen two spots since last year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 Parameter-wise, India has earned a high rating in the GHG Emissions and Energy Use categories with a medium for Climate Policy and Renewable Energy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Observations made on India<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: India had increased its climate targets in the NDC (nationally determined contributions) and also announced a net zero target for 2070.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 However, India&#8217;s climate actions were still not consistent with the 1.5 degree Celsius goal. For instance, India has plans to increase its oil and gas production by over 5% by 2030. This is incompatible with the 1.5-degree Celsius target.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Globally<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Denmark and Sweden have been assessed to be the top performers this year as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 China has been ranked 51st. It has dropped 13 places mainly because of the country\u2019s continued reliance on coal and lack of clarity on long-term climate policies.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 The United States has been ranked 52nd.
