Of these, black rats greatly relish the fleshy, berry-like fruit. During this period, they also multiply rapidly, a phenomenon dubbed as \u2018rat flood.\u2019\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once the fruits are gone, they start devouring standing crops, causing famines that have claimed thousands of human lives.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>Why do rats get attracted to the fruits produced by <\/b><b>Melocanna baccifera?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Earlier, it was presumed that \u2018high protein in fruits\/seeds\u2019 was attracting the rats.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, a study in 2016 has found that the fruit actually contains very little protein.The predation is mainly due to the high content of sugar.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Source: The post is based on the article \u201cSweet, not protein, in bamboo fruits triggers rat boom\u201d published in The Hindu on 19th November 2022 What is the News?
