What are El Nino and La Nina?<\/b><\/span><\/h5>\n

El Nino and La Nina, which mean \u2018the boy\u2019 and \u2018the girl\u2019 in Spanish, are mutually opposite phenomena.<\/p>\n

La Ni\u00f1a refers to the phase in which sea-surface temperatures are cooler than normal. The warmer phase is known as El Ni\u00f1o.<\/p>\n

What is the impact of El Nino and La Nina?<\/h5>\n

Impact of El Nino:<\/b> The phenomena of upwelling, where nutrient-rich waters rise towards the surface, is reduced under El Ni\u00f1o. This in turn reduces phytoplankton. Thus, fish that eat phytoplankton are affected, followed by other organisms higher up the food chain.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 Warm waters also carry tropical species towards colder areas, disrupting multiple ecosystems.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 El Ni\u00f1o also causes dry, warm winters in the Northern U.S. and Canada and increases the risk of flooding in the U.S. gulf coast and south-eastern U.S. It also brings drought to Indonesia and Australia.<\/span><\/p>\n

Impact of La Ni\u00f1a<\/strong>:\u00a0<\/span>This leads to drier conditions in the Southern U.S., and heavy rainfall in Canada. La Ni\u00f1a has also been associated with heavy floods in Australia.<\/span><\/p>\n

What is the effect of El Nino and La Nina on India\u2019s monsoons?<\/b><\/h5>\n

In India, El Ni\u00f1o causes weak rainfall and more heat, while La Ni\u00f1a intensifies rainfall across South Asia particularly in India\u2019s northwest and Bangladesh during the monsoon.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

At present, India, like the rest of the globe is witnessing an extended \u2018triple dip\u2019 La Ni\u00f1a. This is why India saw surplus rain in September, a month that usually sees the monsoon retreat, for the third year in a row.<\/span><\/p>\n

What are the study\u2019s findings?<\/b><\/p>\n

The combination of El Ni\u00f1o, La Ni\u00f1a and the neutral state between the two opposite effects is called the El Ni\u00f1o Southern Oscillation(ENSO). ENSO\u2019s scale is significant enough to influence the global climate.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
