{"id":215836,"date":"2022-11-25T18:36:02","date_gmt":"2022-11-25T13:06:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=215836"},"modified":"2022-11-25T18:36:02","modified_gmt":"2022-11-25T13:06:02","slug":"india-strengthens-the-cites-protection-to-leiths-soft-shelled-turtle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/india-strengthens-the-cites-protection-to-leiths-soft-shelled-turtle\/","title":{"rendered":"India strengthens the CITES protection to Leith\u2019s Soft-shelled Turtle"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The post is based on the article<\/span><b> \u201c<\/b><b>India strengthens the CITES protection to Leith\u2019s Soft-shelled Turtle<\/b><b>\u201d <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">published in<\/span><b> PIB <\/b>on<b> 25th November.<\/b><\/p>\n<h5><b>What is the News?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India\u2019s proposal for transferring Leith\u2019s Softshell Turtle (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nilssonia leithi) <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from Appendix II to Appendix I of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of wild fauna and flora (CITES) has been adopted by the Conference of Parties (CoP) to CITES.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>What is Leith\u2019s Softshell Turtle?\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leith\u2019s Softshell Turtle is a large freshwater soft-shelled turtle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>IUCN Status:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Critically Endangered<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Indian Wildlife Protection Act:\u00a0 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Schedule IV which gives it protection from hunting as well as trade.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Distribution:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It is endemic to Peninsular India. They inhabit rivers and reservoirs <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mainly in southern peninsular India, in states like Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Its presence is substantial in the Cauvery, Tungabhadra, Ghataprabha, Bhavani, Godavari and Moyar drainages<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Threats:<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The species has been subject to intensive exploitation over the past 30 years. It has been poached and illegally consumed within India. It has also been illegally traded abroad for meat and for its calipee. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The population of this turtle species is estimated to have declined by 90% over the past 30 years such that the species is now difficult to find.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>What are the other decisions taken at the COP to CITES?<\/b><\/h5>\n<h6><b>Jeypore Hill Gecko (<\/b><b><i>Cyrtodactylus jeyporensis)<\/i><\/b><\/h6>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India\u2019s proposal for the inclusion of Jeypore Hill Gecko in CITES Appendix II has been approved.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jeypore Hill Gecko is a species of gecko found in India. The species was first discovered in 1877 and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was later thought to be extinct. It <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was rediscovered in 2010 in the Eastern Ghats of Odisha state.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>IUCN Status: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Endangered<\/span><\/p>\n<h6><b>Red-Crowned Roofed Turtle (<\/b><b><i>Batagur kachuga)<\/i><\/b><\/h6>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India\u2019s proposal to transfer of Red-Crowned Roofed Turtle<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from Appendix II to Appendix I of CITES has also been approved.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Red Crowned Roofed Turtle is a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">large, shy riverine turtle. The bright red colored stripes on the head of the males during the breeding season give it the name \u201cRed-crowned\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Distribution:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It is native to India, Nepal and Bangladesh and known to be widely found in the Ganga and Brahmaputra river basins, according to the Wildlife Institute of India (WII).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 At present in India, the National Chambal River Gharial Sanctuary is the only geographic area where the species is found in substantial numbers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>IUCN Status:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Critically Endangered<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Indian Wildlife Protection Act:\u00a0 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Schedule I<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Source: The post is based on the article \u201cIndia strengthens the CITES protection to Leith\u2019s Soft-shelled Turtle\u201d published in PIB on 25th November.
