Regulator must step in\u201d <\/strong>published in <strong>The Times of India<\/strong>\u00a0on\u00a0<strong>29<sup>th<\/sup> November 2022<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Syllabus: GS 2 \u2013 Social Justice<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Relevance: <\/strong><strong>problems with health insurance in India<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>News:<\/strong> India\u2019s out-of-pocket expenditure is around 55% of total health expenditure which is more than the global average of 18%.<\/p>\n<p>However, the experience of individual with health policies has been unsatisfactory even though it has been over two decades since the insurance market opened up.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>What are the problems with health insurance in India?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Health insurance in India has three main problems \u2013 it covers <strong>only hospitalisation<\/strong>, <strong>exclusions<\/strong> as many people are excluded from getting the insurance, and <strong>limits on covering the hospital bills<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Many times, people are excluded from getting the insurance benefit due to different reasons and people bear the cost of paying medical expenses even though they have insurance for it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For example,<\/strong> during the pandemic, many insured found that a significant amount of their hospital bills fell outside the purview of insurance.<\/p>\n<p>Some fear of being cheated as the claims process is often handled by <strong>third party administrators.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The <strong>largest buyer of health insurance<\/strong> is GoI and the state government for their different schemes.<\/p>\n<p>Even though, a good number of people are not covered under their schemes and they remain vulnerable to health emergencies in the absence of a <strong>first-rate insurance system.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Therefore, <strong>IRDAI<\/strong> needs to find a way to enhance the quality of insurance policies by providing individual satisfaction.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Source: The post is based on an article\u00a0\u201cUnsure Payout \u2013 India\u2019s health insurers get away with denying too many claims.
