The proportion of women in the <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Supreme Court is low at 12.5 per cent<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:200,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Recently, the Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud has constituted an <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">all-women bench<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> which is only the third time in the history of SC where an all-women bench has been constituted.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:200,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The position of women is <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">better in lower judiciary<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> but their proportion falls as we move to higher judiciary.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:200,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As per the data, out of 19,288 judges employed in the subordinate courts, 6,765 (35 percent) were women and out of 6765, 55 percent women were employed as civil judges.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:200,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">However, in <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the high courts<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, only 13.2 per cent women occupied the position of judge.<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">Further, there are <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">state-wise disparities<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> in the appointment of women judges in the lower judiciary and the high courts.\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:200,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As per the data, out of the 36 states and Union Territories, 17 had a smaller proportion of women in the lower judiciary than the national average.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:200,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">States with lesser number of women employed in the subordinate courts are<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> \u2013Gujarat (19.5%), Jharkhand (23%), Bihar (24.2%).<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:200,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">States which are in a better position of women employed in the subordinate courts are \u2013<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> Telangana (52.8%), Andhra Pradesh (46.2%) and Punjab (45.8%).<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:200,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The data reveals that five states did not have a single woman judge whereas seven states have less than 10 per cent women in the judiciary.<\/span> <b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Only three states<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> (Sikkim, Telangana and Delhi) had over a fourth of women judges in the high court.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:200,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Further, the number of women has increased in the high courts but their representation has hardly changed.\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:200,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Therefore, these data highlight a grim picture of the women employed in the judiciary in India.
