It threatens agriculture productivity<\/strong>, biodiversity conservation<\/strong>, water quality and socio-economic<\/strong> well being of the dependent population.<\/p>\n

Nearly 3.7 million hectares suffer from nutrient loss in soils.<\/p>\n

What are the initiatives taken by the Indian government for soil conservation?<\/strong><\/h5>\n

Government is implementing a five-pronged strategy<\/strong>. It includes making soil chemical free, saving soil productivity, enhancing SOM, maintaining soil moisture, mitigating soil degradation and preventing soil erosion.<\/p>\n

Government launched the Soil Health Card scheme<\/strong> in 2015. It displays the soil health indicators and guides farmers.<\/p>\n

Another initiative is the PM Krishi Sinchayee Yojana<\/strong> to prevent soil erosion<\/strong>, and for rainwater harvesting<\/strong> and recharging of groundwater.<\/p>\n

The National Mission for Sustainable Agriculture<\/strong> has schemes promoting traditional indigenous practices <\/strong>such as organic farming and natural farming.<\/p>\n

What are initiatives taken by FAO in India for soil conservation?<\/strong><\/p>\n

It is collaborating with the National Rainfed Area Authority<\/strong> and Ministry of Agriculture<\/strong> to develop forecasting tools using data analytics<\/strong> that will aid vulnerable farmers in making informed decisions<\/strong> on crop choices.<\/p>\n

FAO in association with MoRD supports the DAY-NRLM Community Resources persons<\/strong> to increase their capacity towards supporting on-farm livelihoods for adoption of sustainable and resilient practices, organic certification and agri-nutri gardens<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In Andhra Pradesh, FAO is partnering with the state government and ICAR to support farmers in sustainable transitions<\/strong> to agro-ecological approaches<\/strong> and organic farming.<\/p>\n

There is a need to strengthen the communication channels<\/strong> between academia, policymakers and society for identification, management and restoration<\/strong> of degraded soil as well as adoption of anticipatory measures.<\/p>\n
