It forms in the winter when seawater freezes into massive floating ice blocks and thaws during the summer. When sea ice is present, it insulates the ocean against heat loss.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The sea ice reflects sunlight into space, regulating ocean and air temperature and maintaining habitats above and below the water.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Understanding the timings of the thawing of sea ice and freeze onsets, as well as the lengths of the melt and freeze seasons is crucial. These play a vital role in the \u201c<\/span><b>heat budget<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d of the atmosphere-ice-ocean system.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Note: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A heat budget is a balance between incoming heat absorbed by the earth and outgoing heat escaping it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>What did the study find on the Arctic Sea Ice?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Until now, most studies calculated the Arctic melt and freeze onsets using remote sensing observations from the surface, but rarely investigated the freeze-thaw process at the ice bottom.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The researchers have now analyzed data from 2001 to 2018 to explore how melting and freezing vary at the ice surface and bottom.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They found that the surface and bottom of the Arctic sea ice often do not melt and freeze simultaneously.
