Stanislaus, 1977 case<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. It held that <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Article 25 <\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">granted not the right to convert another person to one\u2019s own religion but only to <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">transmit and spread <\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">one\u2019s religion by an exposition of its tenets.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The Constitution Bench decision inspired some other states to enact similar laws. Arunachal Pradesh passed the <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Freedom of Religion Act 1978<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Today there are such laws in about half of our states. Some of these have been either newly enacted or made more stringent. All of them <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">prohibit<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> converting people from one to another religion without their <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">free will<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">What is the way forward on religious conversion?<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">India should follow the advice of <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Mahatma Gandhi<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> on this matter.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">He once said that \u201call faiths are <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">equally true though equally imperfect<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201d.
