The Prime Minister has <\/span>virtually released a commemorative coin and postage stamp to mark the 150th birth anniversary celebrations of Sri Aurobindo.<\/span><\/p>\n

Who was Sri Aurobindo?\u00a0<\/b><\/h5>\n

Sri Aurobindo <\/span><\/a>was born on August 15, 1872. <\/span>He was an Indian philosopher, yogi, maharishi, poet, and Indian nationalist.<\/span><\/p>\n

Aurobindo\u2019s pragmatic strategies to get rid of British rule marked him as <\/span>\u201cthe Prophet of Indian Nationalism\u201d.<\/b><\/p>\n

Education: <\/b>His education began in a Christian convent school in Darjeeling.<\/span><\/p>\n

He entered the University of Cambridge, where he became proficient in two classical and several modern European languages.<\/span><\/p>\n

In 1892, he held various administrative posts in Baroda and Calcutta.<\/span><\/p>\n

Freedom Movement<\/b>: <\/span>The partition of Bengal in 1905 provoked Aurobindo to leave his job in Baroda and plunge into the nationalist movement.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He started the patriotic journal Bande Mataram<\/strong> to propagate radical methods and revolutionary tactics instead of supplication.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He was arrested thrice by the British \u2014 twice for sedition and once for conspiring to \u201cwage war\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I<\/span>n 1908, he was arrested on the charge of the Alipore bomb conspiracy case<\/strong> but was acquitted in 1909 after a long trial.<\/span><\/p>\n

Integral Yoga:<\/b> Though acquitted, Aurobindo faced a constant threat of jail or exile to the Andamans, forcing him to seek refuge in Pondicherry, a French enclave.<\/span><\/p>\n

At Pondicherry, Sri Aurobindo developed a spiritual practice called <\/span>Integral Yoga. <\/b>The central theme of his vision was the evolution of human life into a divine life in the divine body.<\/span><\/p>\n

Aurobindo\u2019s Ideas on Second World War: <\/b>Several Indians saw the Second World War as an opportune moment to get rid of colonial occupation; Aurobindo asked his compatriots to support the Allies and ensure Hitler\u2019s defeat.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 In 1943, he was nominated for the Nobel Prize for literature<\/strong> and then again in 1950 for the Nobel Peace Prize<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Literary works:<\/b> He was also a journalist and his first philosophical magazine called Arya<\/strong> was published in 1914. Among his many writings are The Life Divine<\/strong>, The Synthesis of Yoga and Savitri<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
