The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has also launched two variants of a digital rupee on an experimental basis. One for wholesale transactions between banks and another for retail transactions within the private sector.<\/p>\n<h5>About India&#8217;s digital rupee<\/h5>\n<table style=\"border-collapse: collapse; width: 100%;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 100%;\"><strong>Read here: <a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/rbi-unveils-features-of-digital-rupee-plans-to-launch-pilot-soon\/\">RBI unveils features of digital rupee, plans to launch pilot soon<\/a><\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h5>How India&#8217;s digital rupee is unique?<\/h5>\n<p>India decided to launch two different variants such as the wholesale variant and the retail variant.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Wholesale variant<\/strong>: It operates through the accounts that commercial banks have with the Indian central bank.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Retail variant<\/strong>: It is based on a two-tier system\u2014individuals and firms can hold it only through the banking system.<\/p>\n<p>Some unique features include <strong>a)<\/strong> India&#8217;s digital rupee is based on the <strong>idea of tokens<\/strong>, <strong>b)<\/strong>\u00a0RBI will issue the digital rupee but <strong>banks will distribute it to the private sector <\/strong>like fiat currency.<\/p>\n<h5>Why does India have two different variants?<\/h5>\n<p><strong>Does not try to alter the current monetary system<\/strong>: At present only banks have accounts with RBI while the rest of the economy operates through the commercial banking system. India followed the same approach with the digital rupee also.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Digital rupee does not pay any interest to its holder<\/strong>: Digital rupee is a substitute for cash rather than a substitute for bank deposits.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>challenges<\/strong> with interest-paying CBDC held directly with the RBI are <strong>1)<\/strong> It will create challenges for bank deposits.
