It is a \u2018Shaiba\u2019 (Saivite) pilgrimage site with gigantic rock cut sculptures.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The site displays almost the same mystical charm as the Angkor Wat temple of Cambodia. Hence, it is called the <strong>Angkor Wat of North-East<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Meaning:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Literally, Unakoti means \u2018one less one crore\u2019 in Hindi and Bengali and it is believed that these many rock carvings (ninety-nine lakh ninety-nine thousand nine hundred and ninety-nine) are present here.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 In the local Kokborok language, <\/span><b>Unakoti<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is called Subrai Khung\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Mythological significance:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> According to Hindu mythology, when Lord Shiva was going to Kashi along with one crore gods and goddesses, he made a night halt at this location. He asked all his fellow gods and goddesses to wake up before sunrise and proceed for Kashi.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 It is believed that in the morning, except Shiva, none of them could wake up so he set out for Kashi alone, cursing others to become stone images.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 As a result of this curse, ninety-nine lakh ninety-nine thousand nine hundred and ninety-nine stone images and carvings continue to be present at Unakoti.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>What is Angkor Wat Temple?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Angkor Wat <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">literally means \u2018city of temples\u2019. It<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a temple complex in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cambodia<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and is the largest religious monument in the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The temple was built by king Suryavarman II who is regarded as the Khmer empire\u2019s greatest kings.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The temple was originally constructed as a Hindu temple<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dedicated to the god Vishnu. But it was gradually transformed into a Buddhist temple towards the end of the 12th century.
