The recent clash between Indian troops and PLA soldiers in the vicinity of Tawang should serve as a harsh reminder of the close call that Arunachal Pradesh (then known as the North-Eastern Frontier Agency or NEFA) had in 1962.<\/p>\n<h5>About the 1962 China-India war<\/h5>\n<p>The Chinese PLA advanced along two axes 500 miles apart \u2014 Tawang and Walong. They overran NEFA in three weeks. Later, China declared a ceasefire and PLA troops withdrew 20 km behind the McMahon Line.<\/p>\n<p>Due to faulty intelligence and military incompetence, the Indian army faced challenges.<\/p>\n<table style=\"border-collapse: collapse; width: 100%;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 100%;\"><strong>Read more: <a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/the-new-india-china-tawang-crisis-where-why-and-what-now\/\">The new India-China Tawang crisis: Where, why, and what now<\/a><\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h5>Why India&#8217;s China problem is worrying?<\/h5>\n<p><strong>1)<\/strong> Despite India&#8217;s advancement in military capabilities in the past 60 years, China has seen <strong>phenomenal economic, technological and military growth<\/strong> and competes with the USA for the global \u201cpole-position\u201d, <strong>2)<\/strong> <strong>China has imposed a huge economic burden on India&#8217;s defence budget<\/strong> by forcing the \u201ccounter-mobilisation\u201d of 50,000-60,000 extra Indian troops,\u00a0<strong>3)<\/strong> India&#8217;s <strong>post-Covid financial situation and depressed GDP growth rates<\/strong> will not permit any significant hike in defence expenditure, <strong>4)<\/strong> India&#8217;s <strong>liabilities with the \u201cpay and pension\u201d system<\/strong> makes modernisation and re-equipment of the armed forces not possible, <strong>5)<\/strong> India&#8217;s defence budget at present is 2.1% of the GDP. Schemes like Agnipath and bans on the import of military hardware do not save instant money and do not bring instant self-reliance, and <strong>6)<\/strong> India not only <strong>lacks a China-specific strategy<\/strong>, but also a <strong>national security strategy (NSS)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<table style=\"border-collapse: collapse; width: 100%;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 100%;\"><em><strong>Note<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Cabinet Committee on Security<\/strong> is a four-member committee chaired by the PM. This committee is meant to be the final arbiter on all matters of national security.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The high-powered <strong>National Security Council<\/strong>, the <strong>Strategic Policy Group<\/strong>, and the <strong>National Security Advisory Board<\/strong> were tasked with strategic analysis and evolution of policy options.<\/em><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h5>How India can solve India&#8217;s China problem?<\/h5>\n<p><strong>a)<\/strong> <strong>Resumption of robust economic growth<\/strong> is the only solution for India&#8217;s \u201cguns vs butter\u201d dilemma.
