How can India classify aircraft carriers?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

In terms of size, aircraft carriers can be classified as <\/span>light, medium and super-carrier<\/span><\/b>s. Light carriers can carry up to 25 aircraft, medium-sized around 30 to 50 aircraft, while the super-carriers can carry over 90 aircraft. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In terms of role, they can be categorised as <\/span>fleet, escort, air defence, amphibious assault and anti-submarine warfare carriers<\/span><\/b>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In terms of the methodology used to launch and recover aircraft, they can be categorised as <\/span>Catapult Assisted Take-Off But Arrested Recovery (CATOBAR), Short Take-off But Arrested Recovery (STOBAR), and vertical\/short take-off and landing (V\/STOL)<\/span><\/b> carriers.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What are some facts about aircraft carriers in India?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

India\u2019s first aircraft carrier, <\/span>INS<\/span><\/b> Vikrant <\/span><\/b>was a <\/span>light carrier<\/span><\/b> designed for fleet air defence. It could carry between 21 to 23 aircraft. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Its replacement, INS <\/span>Viraat<\/span><\/i> was a l<\/span>ight fleet air defence carrier<\/span><\/b>. It has an air wing of 26 to 30 aircraft and helicopters.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

INS Vikramaditya<\/span><\/b> is a 45,000<\/span> tonnes medium-sized aircraft carrier<\/span><\/b>. It is capable of both fleet air defence and land attack. It can carry up to 30 aircraft and helicopters.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

IAC-1 <\/span><\/b>is almost similar in size, classification, role and capability to <\/span>INS Vikramaditya<\/span><\/b>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What is the near-term plan of the Indian navy?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

IAC has demonstrated <\/span>India\u2019s capability<\/span><\/b> to design and build the largest and most complex of warships. Few countries have this capability.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The planning for IAC-I began in the<\/span> mid-1980s<\/span><\/b>. The ship was commissioned in September 2022. This time period can be shortened if the next carrier is a <\/span>repeat order<\/span><\/b>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The first four carriers had <\/span>smaller and relatively less capable air wings<\/span><\/b>, as compared to other advanced navies. So, the Indian Navy envisaged a <\/span>50,000 tonnes-65,000 tonnes aircraft carrie<\/span><\/b>r.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Due to financial constraints, the Indian navy has decided to shelve this plan. It is considering a<\/span> repeat order of IAC-1<\/span><\/b>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Why repeat order is the optimal strategy for the Indian navy?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

It would ensure that <\/span>infrastructure, design capability and expertis<\/span><\/b>e built through <\/span>extensive investment and effort<\/span><\/b> are utilised in a proper way.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It will help in achieving the goal of having t<\/span>hree aircraft carriers<\/span><\/b>. <\/span>First Naval Plan Papers in 1948<\/span><\/b> stipulated the need for three aircraft carriers for the Indian Navy.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Similar design and configuration<\/span><\/b> of the two aircraft carriers would also make their <\/span>operation and maintenance <\/span><\/b>easier.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What should be the future strategy for the Indian navy?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

In the long term, India should not avoid <\/span>Chinese capability<\/span><\/b>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

China\u2019s first two aircraft carriers displace over <\/span>65,000 tonnes<\/span><\/b>. It’s third indigenously built carrier displaces 85,000 tonnes. It has a possible air wing of 60-odd aircraft. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

China has future plans for a <\/span>seven-ship carrier force<\/span><\/b>. It includes ambitions to build <\/span>nuclear-powered supercarriers<\/span><\/b> of over 1,00,000 tonnes of displacement.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
