How have Asia-Oceania countries performed in arms sales?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

Arms sales from <\/span>Asia and Oceania increased by 5.8%<\/span><\/b> surpassing weapons sales from Europe.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The <\/span>United States still remains ahead of all the major arms-producing countries and regions.<\/span><\/b> However, China has also seen an increase in its weapons sales in 2021.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

China alone accounted for over 80 percent of the weapons sales<\/span><\/b> in the Asia-Oceania region in 2021. <\/span>Japan was second with South Korea ranked third and India fourth.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What are the reasons behind the increasing Chinese arms sales?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

Self-reliance in defence technology:<\/span><\/b> China invested in its defence technology early in the 1950s due to which it is now seeing its benefit and growth.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The merger of key industries:<\/span><\/b> China merged its Shipbuilding Industry Corporation and China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) into a single entity. This helped consolidation in the Chinese defence industry.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Other reasons are investments in weapons research and development, reverse engineering, etc.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How has India performed in arms sales?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

India also saw improvements in its arms sales in 2021.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited <\/span>(HAL)<\/span><\/b> and Bharat Electronics Limited <\/span>(BEL)<\/span><\/b> saw an increase in their arms sales by 6.7% and 20% respectively.<\/span> However, India lags behind China in arms sales.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What can be the course of action for India?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

India can either move towards a <\/span>fully-privatised defence industry<\/span><\/b> like that of the US or towards a <\/span>defence industrial complex<\/span><\/b> like China.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Further, the government could break up the two state-run monopolies (HAL and BEL) to boost productivity and competitiveness and consolidate them under a single entity like that of China.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
