In September 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi talked about making the US a principal partner \u201cin the realisation of India\u2019s rise as a responsible, influential world power\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What has been India’s global approach to issues of global importance?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

Since its Independence, India has pushed for an agenda that favoured the interests of developing or less developed countries<\/strong>. India took a<\/span> principled stand<\/span><\/b> and stood up to the <\/span>policy domination <\/span><\/b>of the developed world. The examples are <\/span>GATT and NPT<\/span><\/b>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

India\u2019s role as the protector of the interests of the developing world during WTO negotiations has been significant; For instance, <\/span>India played a critical role in preventing developed countries from imposing their <\/span>trade and commercial agendas<\/span><\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

What has changed in India’s global approach recently<\/span><\/b>?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

India stand up for the developing world and uphold its <\/span>strategic autonomy<\/span><\/b>, India started playing a <\/span>proactive role<\/span><\/b> in finding solutions. For example,\u00a0 <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

-The <\/span>Paris Climate Summit<\/span><\/b> in 2015 provided the first major opportunity for India to highlight its new priorities. It played a pivotal role in the climate deal while protecting the interests of the developing world.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

India\u2019s efforts resulted in developed countries agreeing to the principle of <\/span>\u201ccommon and differentiated responsibility\u201d<\/span><\/b>. India also convinced developed countries to agree to the formulation of INDCs.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

-India\u2019s global stature has increased because of its <\/span>constructive response<\/span><\/b> during the Covid pandemic. It supplied vaccines to many developing countries through its <\/span>\u201cVaccine Maitri” <\/span><\/b>programme. In the post-Covid world, India\u2019s importance is growing. Its <\/span>post-Covid economic recovery<\/span><\/b> has been commendable.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

–At the Bali G20 Summit, India played a crucial role in ensuring that both Russia and US can put their viewpoints. India conveyed to the Russian leadership that it was <\/span>not a time for war<\/span><\/b>. India has an opportunity to play a role in ending the war. It will determine its f<\/strong><\/span>uture status<\/span><\/b>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What are the challenges to India’s global approach?<\/span><\/b><\/h5>\n

Externally, China keeps the border tense.\u00a0<\/span>Domestically, the aggravation of <\/span>religious and political fault lines<\/span><\/b> for electoral or ideological reasons may impact the leadership\u2019s ability to rise in global status.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What should be the way forward for India’s global approach?<\/span><\/b><\/h5>\n

India must not compromise on its <\/span>principled stand<\/span><\/b>. It must continue to act as the <\/span>voice of the Global South<\/span><\/b>. This can be done by a)<\/strong> India’s <\/span>diplomatic, strategic and political investment<\/span><\/b>s in its neighbourhood and Asia, Africa and Latin America must increase, b)<\/strong> India\u2019s attention to the ASEAN and Indian Ocean neighbourhood must grow. Its <\/span>Act East polic<\/span><\/b>y<\/strong> needs more response, c)<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>It is important to revive the <\/span>India-Africa Forum Summit<\/span><\/b>. India\u2019s relations with countries in Latin America need more effort, d)<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>As G20 chair, India has the opportunity to set a <\/span>new agenda<\/span><\/b>. In the past, it always worked for the <\/span>judicious sharing <\/span><\/b>of global public goods. It is time now to undertake similar efforts for<\/span> global digital and genetic goods,<\/span><\/b> and e) <\/span><\/b>India always upheld <\/span>moralism<\/span><\/b> in global politics. India must bring that <\/span>moralist dimension <\/span><\/b>to new technological developments.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
