{"id":221330,"date":"2023-01-06T19:04:19","date_gmt":"2023-01-06T13:34:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=221330"},"modified":"2023-01-06T19:04:19","modified_gmt":"2023-01-06T13:34:19","slug":"asian-elephant-has-lost-most-of-its-optimal-habitat-in-nilgiri-reserve","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/asian-elephant-has-lost-most-of-its-optimal-habitat-in-nilgiri-reserve\/","title":{"rendered":"Asian elephant has lost most of its optimal habitat in Nilgiri Reserve"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The post is based on the article <\/span><b>\u201cAsian elephant has lost most of its optimal habitat in Nilgiri Reserve\u201d <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">published in<\/span><b> The Hindu <\/b>on<b> 6th January 2023<\/b><\/p>\n<h5><b>What is the News?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to a study, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the endangered Asian Elephant has lost most of its optimal habitat, the flat terrain in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/nilgiris-elephant-corridor-and-nilgiri-biosphere-reserve\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<h5><b>About the study<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Western Ghats(WG) is an escarpment running north\u2013south along the western coastline of India.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The WG is interrupted towards the south by the low-lying Palghat Gap that separates the northern from the southern <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/african-elephants-and-asian-elephants\/#:~:text=The%20Asian%20elephant%20is%20the,spanning%20South%20and%20Southeast%20Asia.&amp;text=CITES%3A%20Appendix%20I.,Act%2C%201972%3A%20Schedule%20I.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">elephant populations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The northern part of the WG includes Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve(NBR) and its surrounding PAs (protected areas) which contain the largest remaining population of wild elephants.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Earlier, the Palghat gap was relatively flat and consequently easily negotiable by elephants to move from North to South.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, now human settlements and crop cultivation have hindered the movement of the elephants, keeping them confined to the hilly areas considered suboptimal habitats.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>What has been the impact of this?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The study has shown that when barriers are erected, particularly in areas with slopes, elephant movement is blocked and gene flow is reduced.
