The US Food and Drug Administration(FDA) has approved a new Alzheimer\u2019s drug named Lecanemab which is to be marketed as Leqembi.<\/span><\/p>\n

What is Lecanemab?<\/b><\/h5>\n

Lecanemab<\/b>, sold under the brand name <\/span>Leqembi<\/b>, is a medication approved for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease.<\/span><\/p>\n

Working of the drug: <\/b>The drug is a monoclonal antibody that binds itself to a protein in the brain called Amyloid beta.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 By doing so, it helps the body destroy these proteins. People with Alzheimer\u2019s have high levels of Amyloid beta in their brains and, in the trial, Leqembi significantly lowered those amounts.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 However, it remains unclear whether the protein causes Alzheimer\u2019s or how reducing it affects the disease\u2019s progression.<\/span><\/p>\n

Who can use this drug? <\/b><\/h5>\n

The drug should be used only for patients in the early and mild stages of Alzheimer\u2019s disease, matching the status of patients in the clinical trials of the drug.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 It instructs doctors not to treat patients without doing tests to confirm that they have one of the hallmarks of Alzheimer\u2019s: a buildup of the protein amyloid, which Leqembi (like Aduhelm) attacks.<\/span><\/p>\n
