{"id":223513,"date":"2023-01-23T20:13:14","date_gmt":"2023-01-23T14:43:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=223513"},"modified":"2023-02-25T12:13:37","modified_gmt":"2023-02-25T06:43:37","slug":"economy-at-risk-from-move-to-clean-energy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/economy-at-risk-from-move-to-clean-energy\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Economy at risk from move to clean energy\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The post is based on the article <\/span><b>\u201cEconomy at risk from move to clean energy\u201d <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">published in<\/span><b> The Hindu <\/b>on <b>23rd January 2023.<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is the News?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to a study published in the Global Environmental Change journal, India\u2019s financial sector is highly exposed to the risks of the economy transitioning from being largely dependent on fossil fuels to clean energy.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What are the key highlights of the study?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>Loans and Bonds to fossil fuel sector: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Analysis of individual loans and bonds found that 60% of lending to the mining sector was for oil and gas extraction while one-fifth of manufacturing sector debt is for petroleum refining and related industries.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 Electricity production \u2013 by far the largest source of carbon emissions \u2013 accounted for 5.2% of outstanding credit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 This shows that India\u2019s financial sector is highly exposed to activities related to fossil fuel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Financial Institution&#8217;s transition to clean energy:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> There was a shortage of experts in India\u2019s financial institutions who had the expertise to appropriately advise the institutions on the transition from fossil fuel to clean energy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 For instance, only four of the ten major financial institutions surveyed collect information on environmental, social and governance(ESG) risks and these firms do not systematically incorporate that data into financial planning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>High carbon Industries heavily indebted:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> High-carbon industries &#8212; power generation, chemicals, iron and steel, and aviation account for 10% of outstanding debt to Indian financial institutions. However, these industries are also heavily indebted and therefore have the less financial capacity to respond to shocks and stresses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>India\u2019s dependence on coal:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Coal currently accounts for 44% of India\u2019s primary energy sources and 70% of its power generation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 According to the Draft National Electricity Plan 2022, coal\u2019s share in the electricity generation mix will decrease to 50% by 2030, compared to the current contribution of 70%.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Less Lending to renewables:\u00a0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The financial decisions of Indian banks and institutional investors are locking the country into a more polluting, more expensive energy supply.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 For example, only 17.5% of bank lending to the power sector has been to pure-play renewables.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 Consequently, India has much higher electricity from carbon sources than the world average, despite its vast potential for cheap solar, wind and small hydropower.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Source: The post is based on the article \u201cEconomy at risk from move to clean energy\u201d published in The Hindu on 23rd January 2023.
