The subsequent extraction of natural gas became central to the energy supply in the Netherlands.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Why is the Netherlands closing down the Groningen gas field?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gas extraction in the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Groningen gas field <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">resulted in subsidence above the field. From 1991 this was also accompanied by earthquakes.
