{"id":223652,"date":"2023-01-24T19:15:42","date_gmt":"2023-01-24T13:45:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=223652"},"modified":"2023-02-25T12:12:13","modified_gmt":"2023-02-25T06:42:13","slug":"ins-vagir-fifth-scorpene-submarine-commissioned","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/ins-vagir-fifth-scorpene-submarine-commissioned\/","title":{"rendered":"INS Vagir, fifth Scorpene submarine, commissioned"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The post is based on the articl<\/span><b>e \u201cINS Vagir, fifth Scorpene submarine, commissioned\u201d <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">published in <\/span><b>The Hindu <\/b>on <b>24th January 2023.<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is the News?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fifth Scorpene class conventional submarine \u201cINS Vagir\u201d was commissioned into the Indian Navy.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is INS Vagir?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">INS Vagir is the fifth diesel-electric Kalvari-class submarine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is among the six submarines being built by the Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), Mumbai in collaboration with the French M\/s Naval Group under Project 75.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Four of these submarines (<a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/ins-kalvari-to-join-navy\/\">INS Kalvari<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/ins-khanderi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">INS Khanderi<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/ins-karanj\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">INS Karanj<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/explained-what-is-ins-vela-the-submarine-commissioned-by-the-indian-navy\/\">INS Vela<\/a>) have already been commissioned into the Navy and a sixth (INS Vagsheer) will be commissioned next year.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What are the key features of INS Vagir?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kalvari class of submarines have Diesel Electric transmission systems and these are primarily attack submarines or \u2018hunter-killer\u2019 types which mean they are designed to target and sink adversary naval vessels.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They have an estimated endurance of approximately 50 days. They also have the capability of operating in a wide range of Naval combat including anti-warship and anti-submarine operations, intelligence gathering and surveillance and naval mine laying.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These submarines are around 220 feet long and have a height of 40 feet. It can reach the highest speeds of 11 knots (20 km\/h) when surfaced and 20 knots (37 km\/h) when submerged.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is the significance of induction of INS Vagir?\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India currently operates a group of nuclear-powered submarines and diesel-electric submarines.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As per naval warfare principles, for India to create a strategic deterrence, there is a specific number of submarines of both types that India needs to have in active service.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These submarines have their designated roles in the Carrier Battle Groups, which are formations of ships and submarines with Aircraft Carriers in the lead role.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, currently, India has a less-than-ideal number of submarines, with many new ones being at various stages of construction.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the latest induction of INS Vagir, India now has 16 conventional submarines and a nuclear submarine in service.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Source: The post is based on the article \u201cINS Vagir, fifth Scorpene submarine, commissioned\u201d published in The Hindu on 24th January 2023.
