What is the difference between Pranam and Pramana?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Pranam<\/strong>– It is derived from Sanskrit with \u201cpra\u201d meaning \u201cforward\u201d<\/strong> while \u201c\u0101nama\u201d means \u201cbending or stretching<\/strong>\u201d. Together, pranama<\/em> means \u201cbending, bowing in front\u201d.<\/p>\n

Pranam<\/em> is a common Hindu traditional custom of greeting a person<\/strong> where one often bows to a superior person. Bowing to an eminent person and God is considered as a show of faith<\/strong> in them. It denotes faith, tradition, and dogma-based decisions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Pramana<\/strong>– It is also a Sanskrit word, meaning \u201cproof\u201d<\/strong>. It refers to the concept of objectivity and science<\/strong>. It is the means that can lead to knowledge.<\/p>\n

Three of the pramanas, which are almost universally accepted\u00a0 are pratyak\u1e63a (eyewitness or personal experience), anum\u0101na (logical inference), \u015babda (expert opinion<\/strong>).<\/p>\n

What is the difference between science and faith?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

In a science-based society, people have the freedom to question things, and seek answers<\/strong>. Then, they can choose their way forward<\/strong> based on their own understanding.They are free to exchange notes and learn<\/strong> from each other. But this is not the case with faith.<\/p>\n

The other important difference pertains to acceptance of change<\/strong>. Faith and dogma are constants<\/strong> and do not accept questioning.<\/p>\n

As new discoveries occur, our understanding is updated<\/strong>. It is quite possible for scientifically appropriate thinking<\/strong> to change with update.<\/p>\n

We can take the example of the health sector. Our attitudes towards menstruation<\/strong> is a case in point. Rather than treating it as a biological phenomenon<\/strong>, a lot of semi-religious customs <\/strong>have been built around it. They adversely affect a girl\u2019s health.<\/p>\n

Most parents and teachers are very uncomfortable discussing human biology<\/strong> with children. This is also reflected in health issues around childbirth, breastfeeding, and contraception.<\/p>\n

The approach to promote traditional medicine reflects this fault line<\/strong>. There are conflicts between promoting traditional medicine just because it is our tradition<\/strong>, and insisting that it be subjected to the rigours of modern science<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

How is scientific understanding being undermined?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Today, evidence based thinking is under threat. The overload of information<\/strong> and our inability to process them appropriately has resulted in faith being promoted in the presence of abundant information.<\/p>\n

Evidence is manufactured<\/strong> to suit one\u2019s point of view. Rejecting scientific institutions and scientists wholly is unfair.<\/p>\n

The current Covid-19 pandemic provided a fertile ground<\/strong> for promoting faith and questioning science. Today, the teaching of science itself has become a ritual<\/strong>. It is more of rote learning than understanding<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

What is the way forward for society?<\/strong><\/h5>\n

Faith will always have a place in any society but should not be at the cost of science<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

It is also important for faith-based organisations to understand the limitations of faith <\/strong>and not undermine the importance of science in daily life.<\/p>\n

There is a need to learn to coexist<\/strong> by understanding the need for both for our societal wellbeing. Both need to be promoted but not at the expense of the other.<\/p>\n

Teachers or parents should encourage children to ask questions and not only memorise<\/strong> theorems and formulae like mantras. Health professionals must also learn to not belittle faith.<\/p>\n

Platforms for constant dialogue and harmonious coexistence<\/strong> between these two critical pillars of a society are needed in the current times.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
