It also explains the change in business model by Google in India due to SC decision on Competition Commission of India\u2019s rulings.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>How is Google changing its business model in India?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The change was triggered by the Supreme Court asking Google to comply with the <strong>Competition Commission of India\u2019s rulings<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In the new model, instead of creating a bouquet of ap<strong>ps, <\/strong>smartphone makers can<strong> license individual apps<\/strong> from Google. Also, its search engine will not necessarily be the <strong>default setting<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>How the Google business model is facing regulatory crackdown across the world?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>South Korea\u2019s parliament<\/strong> in 2021 passed a bill imposing curbs on the <strong>proprietary billing system of Google and Apple<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The EU in May will enforce a new law called the <strong>Digital Markets Act<\/strong>. It will prevent <strong>\u201cgatekeepers\u201d<\/strong> from engaging in <strong>anti-competitive behaviour<\/strong>. It will no longer be business as usual for the <strong>Android OS ecosystem<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Why substantial change in business approach of big digital companies is unlikely to happen in near future?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The <strong>walled garden approach<\/strong> that ensured Android\u2019s dominance is based on a <strong>complex model of cross-subsidies<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Google\u2019s huge user base comes from offering<strong> free services<\/strong> such as a search engine and email. This user base is then monetised for <strong>advertising revenue<\/strong>. Even <strong>third party apps<\/strong> cannot all wish away Google.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Application Programming Interfaces<\/strong> offered by Google allow app developers to utilise a number of its services. It <strong>reduces development costs<\/strong> for third party app developers. This<strong> web of cross-subsidies<\/strong> cannot be disentangled overnight.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>What is the right way to establish fair competition in digital space?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>The <strong>regulatory crackdown<\/strong> on the Android ecosystem is necessary to open the door to more competition.
