All also perform a <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">regulatory role<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. This can be applied to India\u2019s monetary authority, the RBI.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Despite its <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">admirable competence and proven track record<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, the RBI is perhaps not working as expected. The task before it is <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">simply too large<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. India has become very big on all economic parameters.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">RBI doesn\u2019t have the<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> capacity to supervise an economy<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> that\u2019s growing so fast and becoming larger by the year.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">There exists variation in <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">regional inflation rate<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s. The <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">all-India inflation number <\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">is just too broad to be useful. It misses the considerable<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> inter-state variation<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. It fails to capture things like <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">urban-rural divergence<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> within the same state.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The US has <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">12 Federal Reserve Banks<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, whose 24 branches constitute the Federal Reserve System. Each of these operates within the boundaries of its own designated area.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A key aspect of the US state Feds is to <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">represent the region in the Federal Reserve System<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. For this, they possess a deep understanding of the regional economy.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">RBI also has 25 <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">regional offices<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. It is twice more than twice the number of the US Reserve Banks. But these <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">aren\u2019t independent entities<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.
