{"id":224172,"date":"2023-01-30T19:08:22","date_gmt":"2023-01-30T13:38:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=224172"},"modified":"2023-02-25T10:40:38","modified_gmt":"2023-02-25T05:10:38","slug":"indias-call-to-modify-the-indus-waters-treaty","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/indias-call-to-modify-the-indus-waters-treaty\/","title":{"rendered":"India\u2019s call to modify the Indus Waters Treaty"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The post is based on the articl<\/span>e <b>\u201cIndia\u2019s call to modify the Indus Waters Treaty<\/b><b>\u201d <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">published in<\/span><b> The Hindu <\/b>on <b>30th January 2023<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is the News?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India has sent a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">notice to Pakistan calling for the \u2018modification\u2019 of the Indus Waters Treaty owing to Pakistan\u2019s persistent objections regarding India\u2019s Kishenganga (KHEP) and Ratle hydropower projects in Kashmir.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is the Indus Water Treaty?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/the-indus-water-treaty\/\"><b>Click Here to read<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><b>What are Pakistan\u2019s objections over the Kishenganga and Ratle projects?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kishenganga Hydroelectric Project(KHEP): <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kishenganga, a tributary of the Jhelum river originates in J&amp;K and joins the river in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 The work for KHEP was started in 2007 with a proposal to build a dam on the Kishenganga, diverting its water for a 330 MW hydropower plant in Kashmir\u2019s Bandipora and sending it back.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 The work for the project was supposed to be completed by 2016, but before the construction started, Pakistan had raised objections regarding the height of the dam, fearing it would mean increased water storage for India. Consequently, India agreed to alter the design by lowering its height from 97 metres to 37 metres.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 In 2010, Pakistan took the matter to the International Court of Arbitration objecting to the diversion of water from Kishanganga. The Court gave India a green signal for the project (subject to conditions) in its final ruling in 2013.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013But the Pakistan approached the World Bank three years later in 2016 and again in 2018, objecting to the design. The project was, however, finally inaugurated in 2018.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Ratle hydroelectric power project: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India\u2019s 850-megawatt Ratle hydroelectric power project is on the Chenab river.
