{"id":224404,"date":"2023-01-31T20:38:08","date_gmt":"2023-01-31T15:08:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=224404"},"modified":"2023-02-20T14:51:29","modified_gmt":"2023-02-20T09:21:29","slug":"education-challenges-of-employment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/education-challenges-of-employment\/","title":{"rendered":"Education challenges of employment"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Source<\/strong>: The post is based on an article\u00a0<strong>\u201c<\/strong><strong>Education challenges of employment<\/strong>\u201d published in <strong>Business Standard<\/strong> on\u00a0<strong>31<sup>st<\/sup> January 2023<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Syllabus: GS 3 \u2013 Employment<\/strong><\/p>\n<h5><strong>Relevance: <\/strong><strong>India\u2019s labour force participation rate and unemployment<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><strong>News<\/strong>: The article discusses how education is associated with employment and labour participation rate in India.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What are highlights of the data?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>India suffers from a <strong>poorly educated workforce<\/strong> that is confined to <strong>poor quality jobs.<\/strong> Most employment is <strong>informal and in the unorganized sector<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For example,<\/strong> 48 percent of the workforce had not cleared their 10th exams, 28 percent had cleared between the 6th and 9th standards and 20 percent had cleared only the 5th standard.<\/p>\n<p>Only <strong>12 percent of the workforce was a graduate<\/strong> or postgraduate whereas this ratio in the US is about 44 per cent for persons of 25 years or more.<\/p>\n<p>During September-December 2022, the overall unemployment rate in India was 7.5 percent but <strong>the unemployment rate for graduates was at 17.2 percent<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>And in the same period, nearly 40 percent of the workforce had only high school degrees, i.e., between the 10th and 12th standards.<\/p>\n<p>This shows the dismal picture of India\u2019s labour force because labour participation rate decreases with less education.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>How does the Labour Participation Rate (LPR) change with education?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The labor participation rate and the unemployment rate increase with education and vice versa.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For example,<\/strong> for those with an education between 10th and 12th standards, the LPR rose to 40 percent with the unemployment rising to 10.9 percent compared to those who are less educated.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, in the US, the unemployment rate drops as the education levels rise. However, it is the opposite in India.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, the LPR among graduates is rising in India which is a positive indication for lowering unemployment rate.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What are other problems with the employment in India?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Even though the LPR has improved for graduates, the jobs for them are not growing enough to make a difference to the composition of the workforce. They have still not reclaimed their pre-Covid share in the workforce.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, other problem with the Indian workforce is that many graduates leave India for better job opportunities abroad.<\/p>\n<p>India has been unsuccessful in offering adequate jobs and enough good quality jobs to its graduates.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Source: The post is based on an article\u00a0\u201cEducation challenges of employment\u201d published in Business Standard on\u00a031st January 2023.
