A traditional style of theatre art called Shumang Leela from Manipur has entertained and informed audiences for centuries.<\/span><\/p>\n

What is Shumang Leela?<\/b><\/h2>\n

Shumang Leela is a traditional form of theatre in Manipur.<\/span><\/p>\n

Shumang Leela translates to \u201ccourtyard performance\u201d. It is performed in an open courtyard surrounded by spectators on all four sides.<\/span><\/p>\n

The tradition is believed to be descended from <\/span>Lai Haraoba<\/span><\/i>, a ritual of the Meitei community of Manipur.<\/span><\/p>\n

The plays serve as a medium to spread awareness among people of social, political and economic issues. Shumang Leelas may also discuss moral values, unity and integrity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In this play, the roles of women are all played by men, called <\/span>Nupi Shabis<\/span><\/i>. In the case of women\u2019s theatre groups, the roles of men are played by women.<\/span><\/p>\n

Today, Shumang Leela is of two types: 1)<\/strong> Nupa Shumang Leela, performed only by men and 2)<\/strong> Nupi Shumang Leela, performed only by women.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
