What is the News?<\/b><\/h2>\n

According to the Economic Survey 2022\u201323, India is leading one of the most ambitious clean energy transitions in the world and is unwavering in its resolve to combat climate change.<\/span><\/p>\n

What are the key highlights from the Economic Survey on clean energy transition efforts?<\/b><\/h2>\n

India\u2019s Forest Cover: <\/b>India ranks third globally with respect to the net gain in average annual forest area between 2010 and 2020.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 The survey attributes the same to the robust framework and policies of the National and State Governments such as the Green India Mission(GIM)<\/a><\/strong>, Compensatory Afforestation Fund Management and Planning Authority(CAMPA), etc.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 Among the Indian States, Arunachal Pradesh has the maximum carbon stock in forests and Jammu & Kashmir contributes the maximum per-hectare carbon stock.<\/span><\/p>\n

Preservation of Ecosystems: <\/b>As part of dedicated efforts to preserve ecosystems, India now has <\/span>75 Ramsar sites<\/b> for wetlands.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 There is also an <\/span>increase<\/b> in <\/span>mangrove cover<\/b> by 364 sq. km. in 2021, as a result of various regulatory and promotional measures to protect and conserve mangroves.<\/span><\/p>\n

Transition to Renewable Energy: <\/b>India is progressively becoming a <\/span>favored destination<\/b> for investment in renewables. During the period 2014 -2021, total investment in <\/span>renewables<\/b> stood at <\/span>US$ 78.1 billion<\/b> in India.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 The <\/span>likely installed capacity<\/b> by the end of 2029-30 is expected to be more than 800 GW, of which non-fossil fuel would contribute <\/span>more than 500 GW<\/b>, resulting in the decline of the average emission rate of around 29 per cent by 2029-30 compared to 2014-15.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 National Green Hydrogen Mission<\/a>,<\/b> approved by the government to make India an <\/span>energy-independent<\/b> nation and to <\/span>decarbonize<\/b> the critical sectors, thereby resulting <\/span>in 3.6 Giga tonnes<\/b> of cumulative CO<\/span>2<\/span> emission reduction by 2050.<\/span><\/p>\n

Finance for Sustainable Development: <\/b>The survey throws light on the efforts that India has taken towards <\/span>mobilizing private capital<\/b>:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 Green Bonds: <\/b>The issuance of <\/span>Sovereign Green Bonds<\/b><\/a> will help the government to tap the requisite finance from potential investors for deployment in public sector projects aimed at reducing the carbon intensity of the economy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 A <\/span>Green Finance working committee<\/b> has been set up to oversee and validate key decisions on the issuance of Sovereign green bonds.<\/span><\/p>\n

Business Responsibility and Sustainability Report (BRSR<\/b><\/a>): <\/b>SEBI has issued new sustainability reporting requirements under the BRSR which are more granular with quantifiable metrics in line with the principles ensconced in the <\/span>\u2018National Guidelines on Responsible Business Conduct\u2019<\/b>.BRSR was made <\/span>mandatory<\/b> for the top 1000 listed entities (by market capitalisation) from 2022-23.<\/span><\/p>\n

India at COP 27: <\/b>India has updated its Nationally Determined Contributions(NDCs)<\/span><\/a> by advancing its target of installed electric capacity from non-fossil fuels ahead of 2030, to 50%.\u00a0 The Survey mentions India\u2019s <\/span>Long-Term Low Carbon Development Strategy (LT-LEDS<\/b><\/a>) <\/b>which focuses on the<\/span> rational utilization of national resources with due regard to energy security.<\/span><\/p>\n

Initiatives related to other environmental issues:<\/b><\/h2>\n

The survey highlights the achievement of India in <\/span>doubling<\/b> the <\/span>tiger numbers<\/b> in 2018, four years before the targeted year 2022. The population of <\/span>Asiatic Lions<\/b> has also shown a steady increase, with a population of <\/span>674 individuals<\/b> in 2020, higher than the 523 lions in 2015.<\/span><\/p>\n

New <\/span>Battery Waste Management Rules, 2022<\/b>,<\/span><\/a> & <\/span>E-Waste (Management) Rules, 2022<\/b><\/a> have also been notified to promote the circular economy.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
