{"id":224484,"date":"2023-02-01T19:18:33","date_gmt":"2023-02-01T13:48:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=224484"},"modified":"2023-02-25T10:34:07","modified_gmt":"2023-02-25T05:04:07","slug":"india-ranks-third-in-net-gain-in-annual-forest-area-over-the-past-decade","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/india-ranks-third-in-net-gain-in-annual-forest-area-over-the-past-decade\/","title":{"rendered":"India Ranks Third In Net Gain In Annual Forest Area Over The Past Decade"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The post is based on the article <\/span><b>\u201cIndia Ranks Third In Net Gain In Annual Forest Area Over The Past Decade\u201d <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">published in <\/span><b>PIB <\/b>on <strong>3<\/strong><b>1st January 2023.<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is the News?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the Economic Survey 2022\u201323, India is leading one of the most ambitious clean energy transitions in the world and is unwavering in its resolve to combat climate change.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What are the key highlights from the Economic Survey on clean energy transition efforts?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>India\u2019s Forest Cover: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India ranks third globally with respect to the net gain in average annual forest area between 2010 and 2020.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 The survey attributes the same to the robust framework and policies of the National and State Governments such as the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/economic-survey-2019-20-afforestation-under-green-india-missiongim\/\">Green India Mission(GIM)<\/a><\/strong>, Compensatory Afforestation Fund Management and Planning Authority(CAMPA), etc.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 Among the Indian States, Arunachal Pradesh has the maximum carbon stock in forests and Jammu &amp; Kashmir contributes the maximum per-hectare carbon stock.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Preservation of Ecosystems: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As part of dedicated efforts to preserve ecosystems, India now has <\/span><b>75 Ramsar sites<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for wetlands.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 There is also an <\/span><b>increase<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in <\/span><b>mangrove cover<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by 364 sq. km. in 2021, as a result of various regulatory and promotional measures to protect and conserve mangroves.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Transition to Renewable Energy: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India is progressively becoming a <\/span><b>favored destination<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for investment in renewables. During the period 2014 -2021, total investment in <\/span><b>renewables<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> stood at <\/span><b>US$ 78.1 billion<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in India.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 The <\/span><b>likely installed capacity<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by the end of 2029-30 is expected to be more than 800 GW, of which non-fossil fuel would contribute <\/span><b>more than 500 GW<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, resulting in the decline of the average emission rate of around 29 per cent by 2029-30 compared to 2014-15.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>\u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/cabinet-approves-national-green-hydrogen-mission\/\">National Green Hydrogen Mission<\/a>,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> approved by the government to make India an <\/span><b>energy-independent<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> nation and to <\/span><b>decarbonize<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the critical sectors, thereby resulting <\/span><b>in 3.6 Giga tonnes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of cumulative CO<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> emission reduction by 2050.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Finance for Sustainable Development: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The survey throws light on the efforts that India has taken towards <\/span><b>mobilizing private capital<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>\u2013 Green Bonds: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The issuance of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/green-bonds-benefits-and-challenges\/\"><b>Sovereign Green Bonds<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will help the government to tap the requisite finance from potential investors for deployment in public sector projects aimed at reducing the carbon intensity of the economy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 A <\/span><b>Green Finance working committee<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has been set up to oversee and validate key decisions on the issuance of Sovereign green bonds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/sebis-business-responsibility-and-sustainability-report-norms-mandate-esg-overview\/\"><b>Business Responsibility and Sustainability Report (BRSR<\/b><\/a><b>): <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SEBI has issued new sustainability reporting requirements under the BRSR which are more granular with quantifiable metrics in line with the principles ensconced in the <\/span><b>\u2018National Guidelines on Responsible Business Conduct\u2019<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.BRSR was made <\/span><b>mandatory<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the top 1000 listed entities (by market capitalisation) from 2022-23.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>India at COP 27: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/indias-new-climate-targets-indcs\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India has updated its Nationally Determined Contributions(NDCs)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by advancing its target of installed electric capacity from non-fossil fuels ahead of 2030, to 50%.\u00a0 The Survey mentions India\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/india-submits-its-long-term-low-emission-development-strategy-to-unfccc\/\"><b>Long-Term Low Carbon Development Strategy (LT-LEDS<\/b><\/a><b>) <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which focuses on the<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rational utilization of national resources with due regard to energy security.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Initiatives related to other environmental issues:<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The survey highlights the achievement of India in <\/span><b>doubling<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the <\/span><b>tiger numbers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 2018, four years before the targeted year 2022.
