China and Russia unveiled a partnership \u201cwithout limits\u201d and with no \u201cforbidden areas\u201d<\/strong> in Feb 2022. Russia and China had a strategic partnership<\/strong> for a long time. The Beijing declaration did lay out a solid basis for jointly confronting the West.<\/p>\n

What were the Russian calculations for invading Ukraine?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Putin had hoped that his military offensive would lead to quick collapse of the regime<\/strong> in Ukraine and occupation of Ukraine<\/strong>. This will impact the European security order.<\/p>\n

It will deeply divide Europe and fracture the US-led trans-Atlantic security system<\/strong>. After the US withdrawal from Afghanistan, occupation of Ukraine will further undermine the credibility of the US as a global power<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Putin\u2019s victory in Europe would have had a dramatic impact on Asia<\/strong>. It would have weakened US alliances<\/strong> in Asia and boosted China\u2019s ambition<\/strong> to radically reshape its periphery<\/strong>. China would have used force for unification with Taiwan<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

How has the Ukraine war played out?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Ukraine’s determination has prevented the quick collapse of the regime<\/strong> in Kyiv. It has helped to mobilise massive military assistance from the Western world.<\/p>\n

Putin is locked in a stalemate<\/strong>. He has lost nearly 50% of the territory Russia gained in eastern Ukraine during the early phase of the invasion.<\/p>\n

Russia\u2019s military material and manpower losses<\/strong> have been immense. Moscow faces a harsh regime of Western economic sanctions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

What are the geostrategic implications of the Sino-Russia alliance and Ukraine war?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Putin and Xi have facilitated the Western unity under American leadership<\/strong>. The Ukraine invasion has also allowed the US to put simultaneous pressure on both China and Russia<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In Europe, the Ukraine war has helped the US to galvanize and expand NATO<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The Russian invasion has also triggered the fear of Chinese territorial expansionism in Asia<\/strong>. This has led to the strengthening of US bilateral alliances<\/strong> with Australia and Japan. The US has significantly raised its military and political support<\/strong> for Taiwan.<\/p>\n

The Sino-Russian alliance and the Ukraine wa<\/strong>r have seen Germany and Japan joining the battle against Moscow and Beijing.<\/p>\n

Japan and Germany happen to be the world\u2019s third and fourth largest economies. Their mobilisation significantly alters the so-called \u201cbalance of powers\u201d<\/strong> between the West and the Moscow-Beijing axis.<\/p>\n

Both Berlin and Tokyo are now committed to raising their defence spending<\/strong> to deal with the security challenges from Moscow and Beijing.<\/p>\n

Washington is limiting the influence<\/strong> of Russia and China in Eurasia by bringing its alliances and partnerships<\/strong> in Europe and Asia closer.<\/p>\n

Leaders of America\u2019s Asian allies joined for the first time a NATO summit last June in Madrid. NATO has promised to take a greater interest in shaping the Indo-Pacific balance of power.<\/p>\n

There is a growing prospect that Moscow will become more beholden to Beijing<\/strong> after Putin\u2019s military misadventure in Ukraine. Beijing is unlikely to abandon Moscow. A weakened Putin will remain a valuable asset for Xi <\/strong>even as Beijing seeks to limit some of the new Western hostility to China.<\/p>\n

How is it impacting India?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

China can increase the military pressure on the disputed border<\/strong> with India.<\/p>\n

Delhi depends on Russian military supplies<\/strong> to cope with the PLA challenge and Moscow is now a junior partner to Beijing. This is certainly not a good situation for India.<\/p>\n

Dependence on Russian arms has severely constrained India\u2019s position on Ukraine<\/strong>. It has cast a shadow over Delhi\u2019s engagement with Europe and the US<\/strong>. It is now the biggest constraint on India\u2019s freedom of action<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

India is facing the prospect of a unipolar Asia<\/strong> dominated by a rising and assertive China<\/strong>. So. it has turned to the US and its allies to restore the regional balance of power<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
