This is called as Macrosomia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Note<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: A newborn boy typically weighs 3.3kg and girls 3.2kg.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is Macrosomia?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Macrosomia is a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">term used to describe giant babies. Any baby that weighs more than 4kg, regardless of its gestational age, is said to have macrosomia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Babies with macrosomia account for about 12% of births.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What are the factors that cause Macrosomia?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>Mother&#8217;s body weight<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Obese mothers are more likely to have children with Macrosomia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Mothers with gestational diabetes: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High blood sugar that arises during pregnancy, also increases the risk of Macrosomia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Being older<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when pregnant also increases the odds of having a baby with macrosomia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Overdue pregnancies:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Those that run past the typical 40 weeks \u2013 also increase the risk of a baby being macrosomic, particularly at 42 weeks or more.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Previous pregnancie<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s increase the risk of macrosomia because, with each successive pregnancy, birth weight increases.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Having a boy increases the likelihood of macrosomia<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Boys are three times more likely than girls to be born with macrosomia.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is the impact of Macrosomia?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Babies with macrosomia are more likely to encounter difficulties moving through the birth canal because of their large size. For example, it is quite common for the baby&#8217;s shoulder to get caught behind the mother&#8217;s pubic bone. The medical term for this is &#8220;<strong>shoulder dystocia<\/strong>&#8220;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mothers are also at increased risk of vaginal tear during delivery, which then increases the risk of postpartum hemorrhage (bleeding).
