What is the News?<\/b><\/h2>\n

Chief Justice of India (CJI) has recently reiterated that the collegium takes into consideration the seniority of Chief Justices and senior puisne judges while deciding on recommending judges.<\/span><\/p>\n

What does Puisne mean?<\/b><\/h2>\n

According to the dictionary, the<\/span> word puisne has French origins, which means \u201clater born\u201d or younger.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Puisne is almost always used in the context of judges, <\/span>and essentially denotes seniority of rank.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The term puisne judge is used in common law countries <\/span>to refer to<\/span> judges who are ranked lower in seniority<\/span>, i.e., <\/span>any judge other than the Chief Justice of that court.<\/span><\/p>\n

Note: <\/b>Common law is the body of law that is created by judges through their written opinions, rather than through statutes or constitutions (statutory law). The United Kingdom (UK) and the Commonwealth countries, including India, are common law countries.<\/span><\/p>\n

About Puisne Judge in India<\/b><\/h2>\n

In India, all judges have the same judicial powers, but the Chief Justice is the senior-most judge and has an additional administrative role.<\/span><\/p>\n
