The term remains a <strong>shorthand<\/strong> for Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura and Sikkim.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The \u201cbackward\u201d, \u201cunderdeveloped\u201d, \u201cculturally isolated\u201d, or \u201chistorically distant\u201d<\/strong> are used to mark its distinctiveness from other parts of the country.<\/p>\n<p>It is further reinforced through <strong>exclusive region-wide planning bodies, separate ministries and region-specific area studies centres<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What is the history associated with the region?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>In its <strong>colonial origins<\/strong>, the northeast was a frontier inhabited by the wild peoples of farther India who are <strong>culturally outside Bhara<\/strong>t.<\/p>\n<p>The adoption of the term by independent India was the recognition of its <strong>conflict-mediating and order-keeping functions in a politically unsettled region<\/strong>. After 75 years of independence, there is no shift in our understanding of the term.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What are issues with the use of the term northeast?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>There is no agreement on what unifies the constituents of the northeast. There is no single criterion of culture, language, religion, ecology, economy, or agriculture that unifies the region. Yet, it is treated as a distinctive cultural zone.<\/p>\n<p>Its use has generated <strong>complex images, assumptions, beliefs and cultural justifications <\/strong>about the region and its peoples.<\/p>\n<p>It <strong>essentializes the history and identity<\/strong> of the various states and their peoples.
