What are the importance of India for Canada and vice versa?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Canada was among the first countries associated with India\u2019s nuclear programme. Both countries have an agreement on civil nuclear cooperation.<\/p>\n

Canada\u2019s deteriorating ties with China<\/strong>: Canada in its new Indo-Pacific Strategy<\/strong> marked out China as an \u201cincreasingly disruptive global power\u201d and mentioned India as a \u201ccritical partner\u201d with shared traditions of democracy and pluralism.<\/p>\n

Canada\u2019s search for new markets<\/strong> to diversify its considerable economic engagement with China coincides with India\u2019s push to conclude free trade agreements<\/strong> with many countries.<\/p>\n

India also has a massive diaspora population and student links in Canada.<\/p>\n

Note<\/strong>: Both India and Canada are already working on an \u201cEarly Progress Trade Agreement\u201d and planned to finalise a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement.<\/em><\/p>\n

What are the challenges in developing bilateral ties between India and Canada?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

a)<\/strong> India has continued to express concerns over the resurgence of Khalistani separatism<\/strong>, b)<\/strong> Canadian pronouncements on developments in India, including on rights and freedoms is always a cause of concern. For instance, the Canadian PM’s comment on farmers\u2019 agitation in 2020-21 led to the cancellation of diplomatic activity for a while.<\/p>\n
