{"id":225932,"date":"2023-02-10T19:22:09","date_gmt":"2023-02-10T13:52:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=225932"},"modified":"2023-02-22T10:57:34","modified_gmt":"2023-02-22T05:27:34","slug":"victory-city-a-brief-history-of-the-kingdom-of-vijayanagara-in-which-salman-rushdies-latest-novel-is-situated","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/victory-city-a-brief-history-of-the-kingdom-of-vijayanagara-in-which-salman-rushdies-latest-novel-is-situated\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Victory City\u2019: A brief history of the kingdom of Vijayanagara, in which Salman Rushdie\u2019s latest novel is situated"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The post is based on the article <\/span><b>\u201cVictory City: A brief history of the kingdom of Vijayanagara, in which Salman Rushdie\u2019s latest novel is situated\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> published in <\/span><b>Indian Express <\/b>on <b>10th February 2023<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is the News?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Salman Rushdie released a new novel <\/span><b>\u201cVictory City\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 a fictionalized story of the Vijayanagara Kingdom.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Vijayanagara Empire<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vijayanagara Empire was founded in 1336 by <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Harihara I of the Sangama dynasty.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The kingdom <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">expanded from a strategic position on the banks of the Tungabhadra river with Hampi as its capital.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The kingdom reached its peak under Krishna Deva Raya (reign 1509-1529), a period in which it enjoyed military superiority to its rival kingdoms such as the Bahmani Sultanate, the Golconda Sultanate and the Gajapatis of Odisha.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At its peak, the kingdom stretched from Goa on the Konkan coast to parts of southern Odisha in the east and all the way to the very tip of the subcontinent in the south.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Economy: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The economy of the kingdom was largely dependent on agriculture, and trade thrived in its many ports on either coast.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 Traveller Abd al-Razzaq Samarqandi chronicled how the ports of Mangalore, Honavar, Bhatkal, Barkur, Cochin, Cannanore, Machilipatnam and Dharmadam saw traders from Africa, Arabia, Aden, the Red Sea, China and Bengal and also served as shipbuilding centres.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 The empire\u2019s principal exports were pepper, ginger, cinnamon, cardamom, myrobalan, tamarind timber, anafistula, precious and semi-precious stones, pearls, musk, ambergris, rhubarb, aloe, cotton cloth and porcelain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 Coins were minted by the state as well as by merchant guilds using gold, silver, copper and brass, and their value depended on material weight.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Architecture and Literature<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Literature in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, as well as Sanskrit, was produced in the kingdom with new writing styles and methods emerging.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 Vijayanagara architecture is a vibrant combination and blossoming of the Chalukya, Hoysala, Pandya and Chola styles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 The Prasanna Virupaksha temple of Bukka I and the Hazara Rama temple of Krishna Deva Raya are striking examples of Vijayanagara\u2019s characteristic style and intricate artistry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 Vijayanagara\u2019s capital Hampi is a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its sophisticated fortifications as well as innumerable temples and other architectural marvels.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 From accounts of foreign travellers, by the beginning of the 16th century, Hampi-Vijayanagara was probably the second-largest urban settlement on the planet (after Beijing).<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Source: The post is based on the article \u201cVictory City: A brief history of the kingdom of Vijayanagara, in which Salman Rushdie\u2019s latest novel is situated\u201d published in Indian Express on 10th February 2023 What is the News?
