{"id":226518,"date":"2023-02-14T20:18:25","date_gmt":"2023-02-14T14:48:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=226518"},"modified":"2023-02-22T10:42:33","modified_gmt":"2023-02-22T05:12:33","slug":"draft-bill-vests-powers-entirely-in-geological-survey-of-india-say-expert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/draft-bill-vests-powers-entirely-in-geological-survey-of-india-say-expert\/","title":{"rendered":"Draft Bill vests powers entirely in Geological Survey of India, say expert"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The post is based on the article<\/span><b> \u201cDraft Bill vests powers entirely in Geological Survey of India, say expert\u201d <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">published in<\/span><b> The Hindu <\/b>on <b>14th February 2023.<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is the News?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Ministry of Mines has introduced a <\/span><b>Draft Geo-heritage Sites and Geo-relics (Preservation and Maintenance) Bill,2022.<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is the purpose of the Bill?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Bill is aimed at protecting India\u2019s geological heritage that includes fossils, sedimentary rocks and natural structures.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What are the Key Provisions of the Bill?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Bill vests powers entirely in the <a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/geological-survey-of-india-gsi\/\">Geological Survey of India(GSI)<\/a> to <strong>1)<\/strong> Declare sites as having \u2018geo-heritage\u2019 value, <strong>2)<\/strong> take possession of relics (fossils, rocks) that rest in private hands, <strong>3)<\/strong> prohibit construction 100 metres around such a site and <strong>4)<\/strong> penalize \u2014 with fines up to \u20b95 lakh and possibly imprisonment \u2014 vandalism, defacement and violations of directives of a site by the Director General of GSI.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What are the concerns with the Bill?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Geoscientists, rather than having all authority in the Director General, GSI, there needs to be a broader committee of experts from a wider range of institutions.
