{"id":226560,"date":"2023-02-14T19:47:17","date_gmt":"2023-02-14T14:17:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=226560"},"modified":"2023-02-20T13:09:27","modified_gmt":"2023-02-20T07:39:27","slug":"unmet-needs-in-wireless-regulations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/unmet-needs-in-wireless-regulations\/","title":{"rendered":"Unmet needs in wireless regulations"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Source<\/strong>: The post is based on an article\u00a0<strong>\u201c<\/strong><strong>Unmet needs in wireless regulations<\/strong>\u201d published in <strong>Business Standard<\/strong> on\u00a0<strong>14<sup>th<\/sup> February 2023<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Syllabus: GS 3 \u2013 Economy<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Relevance: <\/strong><strong>concerns associated with telecom sectors in India<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>News<\/strong>: The communication sector in India is suffering from various hurdles and there is a need to resolve these.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What are the problems with the communication sector in India?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Lack of expenditure:<\/strong> The expenditure on roads and railways is twice the amount on communications.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lack of proper regulatory policy:<\/strong> The communication sector in India lacks proper policy regulations as seen in the case of Vodafone.<\/p>\n<p>Vodafone was imposed with <strong>retrospective taxes<\/strong> in 2007. However, it was later set aside by the Supreme Court.<\/p>\n<p>Vodafone and other operators <strong>fought licence fees claimed<\/strong> on non-telecom revenues included in aggregate gross revenues (<strong>AGR<\/strong>) since 2003 while the interest on dues kept on rising.<\/p>\n<p>HowevUnmet needs in wireless regulationser, in 2021 a four-year temporary relief package was announced on debt repayments while the interest kept on rising on the dues.<\/p>\n<p>Due to these improper solutions Vodafone and its operators kept on suffering. However, on 3rd February, <strong>the government decided to convert Vodafone\u2019s dues into government-held equity.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>These all show the <strong>irresponsible behaviour of the government<\/strong> and lack of proper policy measures which made Vodafone to suffer for a decade.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Wireless policies and the use of optical fibres:<\/strong> As per ICRA, full-scale 5G deployments across India would require expenditure of about Rs 3 trillion because nearly two-thirds of the towers lack fibre connectivity.<\/p>\n<p>However, looking at the high debt of telecoms and high cost of fibres, it is unexpected that telecommunication companies would invest heavily.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, there is an urgent need for the policy makers to come up with wireless policies based on successful models in other countries.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Other requirements:<\/strong> There is a need to <strong>enable 6GHz for Wi-Fi, allow speeds of up to 10 Gbps<\/strong>, and <strong>support for local product development<\/strong> and production instead of relying on imports.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Source: The post is based on an article\u00a0\u201cUnmet needs in wireless regulations\u201d published in Business Standard on\u00a014th February 2023.
