News- Recently<\/b><\/strong>, UGC unveiled draft norms for allowing foreign universities to set up campuses in India with autonomy to decide the admission procedure and fee structure.<\/p>\n

What are arguments against foreign university campuses in India?<\/b><\/strong><\/h2>\n

Students and teachers believe that foreign campuses will not be enough to stop\u00a0educational emigration<\/b><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

A report by OECD<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0re\u00adcen\u00adtly pointed out that Indians studying in economically developed countries<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0were the most likely to stay back in their host country and join the local workforce.<\/p>\n

The UGC\u2019s move assumes that stud\u00ade\u00adn\u00adts will be satisfied with the tag of a prestigious global institution. But that is hardly the central motivation<\/b><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

University campu\u00adses in the US not only offer a vibrant community of international scholarship, <\/b><\/strong>but also an ecosystem of internships, apprenticeships, skill development and vocational training courses.<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n

Fore\u00adign varsities that offer their curricula in In\u00addia can only provide a part of the experien\u00adce enjoyed by students who study abroad.<\/p>\n

The courses offered in foreign institutes have strong interdisci\u00adplinary components<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0that branch into skill-development and vocational trai\u00adning<\/b><\/strong>. Indian students who wish to bring their skills on a par with global in\u00add\u00adustry re\u00adquirement<\/b><\/strong>s, would prefer to go to a university\u2019s home campus.<\/p>\n

What are arguments in favour of foreign university campuses in India?<\/b><\/strong><\/h2>\n

Indian students who want to study abroad will be more than a million<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0in the near fut\u00adu\u00adre. Campuses of foreign universities in In\u00addia can admit only a fraction of the students going abroad.<\/p>\n

The students who do not plan to emigrate may choose to study in the campuses of foreign higher education institutions in India.<\/p>\n

Foreign universities in India will\u00a0bridge the gap between the skill-development system and traditional de\u00adgree education<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0by ident\u00adifying and mitigating bottlenecks in India\u2019s skill development ecosystem.<\/p>\n

It will also augment technology transfer, re\u00adsearch and innovation<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0in the country. This will further lead to the creation of strategic training programme<\/b><\/strong>s and a pool of proficient individuals<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0who can leverage emerging global opportunities.<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n

This provides an opportu\u00adnity to tap into the very large pool of\u00a0NRI educators<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0in universities all over the world and who can bring the best of both local knowledge and international experience and connections.<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n

What is the way forward to improve higher education in India?<\/b><\/strong><\/h2>\n

The high\u00ader education ecosystem in India needs to be more\u00a0thoroughly in\u00adtegrated <\/b><\/strong>with the job market, in terms of apprenticeships, skill-training workshops, and vocational cou\u00adrses.<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0There is a need for investment in the post-curricular ecosystem.<\/p>\n

India should address the\u00a0skilling needs<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0of its population. For vocational skills<\/b><\/strong>, it should look tow\u00ada\u00adrds the\u00a0German, Swiss, Austrian and Sin\u00adg\u00ada\u00adporean apprentice systems for inspiration.<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n

The gover\u00adnment must first focus on implementing its landmark announcements as the Nat\u00adional Research Foundation and the alloca\u00adtion of 25% of the defense R&D bud\u00adge<\/b><\/strong>t for higher education system and the private sector in an effective way.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
