{"id":227821,"date":"2023-02-21T21:04:14","date_gmt":"2023-02-21T15:34:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=227821"},"modified":"2023-02-21T21:04:14","modified_gmt":"2023-02-21T15:34:14","slug":"we-should-shed-colonial-legacy-by-creating-content-in-mother-languages","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/we-should-shed-colonial-legacy-by-creating-content-in-mother-languages\/","title":{"rendered":"We should shed colonial legacy by creating content in mother languages"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Source<\/strong>&#8211; The post is based on the article <strong>\u201cFormer Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu writes: We should shed colonial legacy by creating content in mother languages\u201d<\/strong>published in <strong>The Indian Express <\/strong>on <strong>23th February 2023<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Syllabus: <\/strong>GS1- Art and Culture<\/p>\n<p><strong>Relevance: <\/strong>Socio-Cultural development<\/p>\n<p><strong>News- <\/strong>The article emphasis the need to overhaul the language of education system to make it more <strong>inclusive and diverse<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><strong>What is the viewpoint of UNESCO on mother language?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>In November 1999<strong>, UNESCO<\/strong> declared <strong>February 21 as International Mother Language Day<\/strong> in response to the declining state of many languages all over the world.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s theme<strong>, \u201cMultilingual education \u2014 a necessity to transform education,\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>UNESCO states<\/strong>, a monolingual system of education which relies on \u201c<strong>providing education in only one<\/strong> <strong>language<\/strong> that is not necessarily shared by all learners <strong>may negatively impact learning<\/strong> performance, and the development of socio-emotional and foundational literacy skills.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What are the challenges with colonial era learning?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Even as we <strong>Amrit celebrate Azadi ka Mahotsav<\/strong>, to mark 75 years of Independence, we have not been able to shed this colonial legacy of dependence on English.<\/p>\n<p>Educators and parents continue to accord unquestioned primacy to English and, as a result, <strong>the child<\/strong> <strong>is compelled to study his or her mother tongue as a \u201csecond\/third language\u201d at school.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Our emphasis on English has, ironically, made the educational system <strong>exclusive and restrictive<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>While limiting the acquisition of knowledge in technical and professional courses, to a select few, we made it <strong>inaccessible to a vast majority of our students.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><strong>What are government initiatives in this regard?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The <strong>National Education Policy (NEP) 2020<\/strong> is a farsighted document which advocates education in one\u2019s mother tongue right from the primary-school level.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0AICTE\u2019s<\/strong> landmark decision to permit <strong>BTech programmes<\/strong> <strong>in 11 native languages<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Government is looking forward for <strong>employment and job creation<\/strong> in mother languages ex-SSC.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What is the way forward?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Mother tongue as the medium of instruction gives confidence to youth.<\/p>\n<p>Including mother languages in learning,we can fast-track methods to make quality education more <strong>accessible, equitable and inclusive<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Thus, steps need to be scaled up at all levels.
